St Catherine's part 2

Troy Jackson and his twin sister Milly stood side by side looking up at the large imposing building in front of them. St Catherine's school was set in lovely grounds and was an old manor house. New buildings such as the sports hall, swimming pool and main hall complemented the school but were set to the rear and thus did not spoil the view from the sweeping drive.

The twins walked down the empty drive towards the main entrance, the school was quiet and seemingly deserted. This was because school opened tomorrow but today was an induction day for new pupils except the junior classes of 11-year olds which had come in the day before. So, it was just a handful of kids joining into established classes.

They entered the front doors and found themselves at reception and were relieved to see that there were other boys and girls there. In total including themselves there were 8, 5 girls and 3 boys. They were aged between 12 and 15.

After being told to wait with the others for a short while, the clip of a pair of shoes on the floor could be heard coming towards them. They looked up to see Mrs. Hardcastle the head approaching.

" Good morning and welcome to St Catherine's. "

The assembled group all replied, " good morning Miss". She smiled and then looked down consulting her papers in her hand. " let’s see if we have everyone we are expecting? Just reply when I call out your name: Jennifer Sanders (12), Sean Davis, (12), Antonia Sharpe (13), Alison Wickes (13), Milly Jackson (14), Troy Jackson (14), Jade Harris (15) and last but not least Kevin Harding (15). And with that she turned and led the group down the hall and into a classroom where there were other staff chatting as the group walked in. The kids took up seats and the day started.

The day was filled with information, tour of the school, timetables and introductions to key staff such as form teachers, house master/mistress, subject teachers.

Mrs. Hardcastle continued, "We are now going to do the medical checks, you should have all brought your completed forms in?" she looked around the room as the kids got their forms out, "good. Now if the boys would go with Mr. Jenkins please, put your forms on the desk on your way out. "

The 3 got up and soon were walking down the corridor following the head of Boys Physical Education. They each had their bags having been told to bring in their regulation pe kit of white shirt, shorts and plimsolls.

They crossed the rear courtyard and into the sports hall. The boys changing rooms were to the right and Mr. Jenkins led them in. "Right lads standard changing room, lockers over there and that far door opens into the main sports hall. Behind you are the showers which are compulsory for all boys after all lessons. I’d like you now to get your shorts out please and then strip down."

The boys fussed around in their bags none of them wanting to be the first to strip off. "Come on boys we haven’t got all day, get undressed now" said Mr. Jenkins more firmly.

The boys hurried along and soon all 3 were naked. Davis had started to put his shorts on but was told not yet.

Mr. Jenkins surveyed the 3 boys standing in front of him. They followed quietly into the sports hall where they joined the girls who were dressed in pe kit also but of course with their tops on. A set of screens had been placed and behind were 2 areas for the doctor and the nurse. The girls were sitting on benches and Mr. Jenkins told the boys to join them. Troy immediately went and sat next to his sister closely followed by Davis.

"okay" said his sister

"fine though wish I had my shirt on, it’s a bit chilly"

Milly laughed, " yeah sports halls always are until you start running around, probably designed that way"

The two younger of the girls were already getting examined and shortly after Jade and Alison were called forward by the nurse leaving the 3 boys and Milly. The twins chatted about what had happened that day so far and what they thought about the school.

Milly enthused about the language labs, she was studying both French and Spanish and already plotting a career which would help her travel. Troy wasn’t as academic as his sister preferring sport but also art and drama and he had been impressed by the size of the stage and his talk with the drama teacher.

After about 10 minutes the two girls emerged and headed back to change, and Dean and Kevin were called forward.

Behind the screens sat the school doctor Susan Johnson and Matron, Marjorie Bayliss separated by another screen.

The 2 boys appeared, and matron smiled and asked who was who.

"Right boys, the way this works is I take all the measurements and tests whilst Dr Johnson goes through your medical form and examines you. Understood? Good. "

Matron was a typical nurse, warm and kindly but years of working with children meant she also had seen it all from feigned illnesses and adolescent grumpiness through to bad spirts injuries and problems 'down below". This meant she put up with no nonsense and fully agreed with the school approach to behaviour and discipline.

"Now boys please take off your shorts, pop on them over there and we can begin.” The boys by this stage, despite the embarrassing situation, quickly realised that they should do as they were told and were soon naked again.

Matron led Sean over to her side whilst Kevin went to sit with the Doctor.

She took Sean’s blood pressure, his cholesterol check and then his wright and height. And measurements such as waist, chest. All seems fine she said.

She led Sean to the other side and they stood and watched as the Doctor was now examining Kevin listening to his heart with her stethoscope. She undertook all the tests and measurements and then told him to wait whilst she popped to the other side to speak to Dr Johnson who had finished examining Milly and had established that she had started 2 years previously way ahead if her twin, an interesting fact they thought.

The children were reminded about school uniform policy (strict do not attempt to alter it) by Miss Miller and about the behaviour standards and discipline policy and it was here that the boys were in for a shock.

Miss Miller explained,

" We have high standards here at St Catherine's and we expect all pupils to abide by the rules. The rules are not just made up for fun or to make it a misery for teenagers, but we are a community here we all spend a lot of time together, so rules are needed. I will tell you all this just the once. Our discipline code is strict, and punishment will happen if you break the rules. Detentions at lunchtime and after school, work detail around the e school and for boys there is always the corporal punishment option. Slippering and the cane so you have been warned. "

Troy looked at his sister open mouthed, whispering, "Mother never told me that", his sister smiled and just shrugged her shoulders and whispered back, "just make sure you behave then Troy". He muttered "not fair".

“Now that I have explained the discipline code, I thought it best to make sure you clearly understood. This boy, Fowler, has been caught at the end of last term swearing at the prefects when asked to do a simple task and is therefore with his parents’ full permission due a punishment. Rose will administer the punishment and so I hope this will enforce the rules in your minds clearly. Caleb. "

The 18-year-old school captain stepped forward, “thank you Miss Fowler come here and bring that gym shoe with you.” The boy dressed only in his flimsy white shorts stepped forward holding the gym shoe which he presented to the older boy. Rose took it and then said, "right get those off and then hands on the desk, you know the position Fowler.”

To the astonishment and almost disbelief of the group of new pupils especially the 3 boys, Fowler dropped and stepped out of his shorts and totally naked bent over the desk. Right that’s all from us, there is an envelope on the table at the back for your parents please make sure you take it as there are some forms to be signed and brought in tomorrow. She smiled and then walked out of the room leaving the 8 newbies there pondering about what awaited them the next day. Milly and Troy walked outside and found they had 15 minutes before their mum was due to collect them, so they decided to walk to the end of the drive. As they walked they talked about the day.

"Well that was different " said Milly, " what do you think bro? "

"I don’t know all that punishment stuff really scary, alright for you girls I think I’d die if I got spanked like that boy"

They climbed into the car and she asked how it went. Milly chatted away enthusiastically about the school and its facilities etc. whilst Troy sat in the back thinking and processing what he had seen and what had happened. Must make sure to behave and not forget PE kit, he told himself. His second thought reverted to Kevin, wow he was big! Was it just curiosity or something more. He shrugged off the thoughts and came back to reality when he heard his Mum say his name asking him for his views. What a weird day.
