Part 20

The kids sat there a little nervous waiting for the Doctor to tell Charlie the results. When the man came out with his father, the two men sat across from them. "OK Charlie and the rest of you I guess. It looks like we've beaten the infection, but we won't know for two days until the lab tests on his blood and urine come back. So in the meantime Charlie, I want you to keep taking the medicine like before until we are 100% positive that you don't need them. "Ok Doctor I can do that, it's no different than what I've been doing." Charlie replied.

"Beyond that Charlie, like I said during the examination, I'm concerned about that scar tissue at the bottom of your bladder and if that's going to have any long term effects. You tell me that you're not having daytime problems with accidents now; so that makes me very hopeful that once all the medicine is out of your system that you won't have problems at night either. We just won't know until it's out of you and we can see how you are. The worst that can happen at this point is you may have some nighttime problems, but nothing like you've had while on that medicine."

"So I may still need diapers at night? But, I might be back to normal. We just have to wait and find out. Is that what you're telling me?" Charlie asked.

"Yes Charlie, but even if you still need diapers sometimes, it won't be like it's been. I think that usually you'll wake up and know you need to go. But it might be that you'll go through some periods where you'll have accidents. We just can't tell right now."

"OK well at least you're being honest with me and I want to thank you for that. If that's what happens then I can live with that. I won't like it, but I can deal with it. I just don't want to live my entire life in diapers."

"Charlie you deserve for me to be honest with you; you've been through so much. Short version: Best - no problems, back to normal; Worst – what I described before; Most probable? – something in between. But I'm hoping for the best and the worst at this point isn't that bad. Not considering what the worst was two weeks ago."

"Well I guess we just wait and see then," Charlie replied. "Doctor I need to thank you for everything you've done for me; you've been really great in the way you've treated me and I really appreciate it. I just thought you needed to know."

"Thanks Charlie you've been a really good patient and all of you kids and Kathy too have done a wonderful job helping Charlie and I'm really proud of all of you. You have some really good friends here Charlie, they've gone well beyond what we normally expect of kids your age and you need to keep them close and not lose them accidently."

"I know that more than you do Doctor, I love my friends more than I can express and I'd do anything for any of them." He replied smiling at them. "So let's head home kids and get some dinner. We'll stop along the way and pick up some pizzas and celebrate that Charlie's getting better," his dad said smiling at the kids and all of them jumped up and each thanked the doctor as they left the office.

His Dad used his cell phone to call a pizza shop as they walked out to the parking lot and when they got there, he looked at his sedan. "Well some of you will have to double up, to get us all in, he said looking at them.

"How about Mary and Susan in front with you Dad, and Cindy, Max and I will take the back seat and little Nick here can sit on my lap, since he's so small." Charlie suggested.

"Everyone ok with that?" his dad asked.

"You sure about that Charlie, I could sit on Max or Cindy I don't think they'd mind." Nick asked.

"I want you on my lap," he replied so that only Nick and Max heard. "The two of us will take up less space," he said louder.

"Ok then," Nick replied grinning.

With that decided, they piled into the car, Charlie in the middle, with Max and Cindy on the outsides of the backseat and Nick happily on Charlie's lap in the middle, it was still a little tight, but everyone was comfortable about the arrangements.

Once the car started moving, Nick turned sideways and put his feet on his brother's lap, and looked up at his friend. "Charlie it really didn't hurt when he put that thing in your dick?" he asked softly, so soft that only Max and Cindy heard, because Mary and Susan were talking with his father in the front seat.

When they stopped for pizza, Mary and Susan ended up holding the big boxes in the front seat; actually Mary ended up with four of the five, since more than one on Susan's lap got in the way of Mr. Miller's hands when he was driving. We should take these over Cindy's house, so that Kathy can have some too; besides she put a lot of effort in getting Charlie well too."

"She'd like that Mary. Mr. Miller?" Cindy asked.

"Do you think your mother would mind?"

"Not if she got a slice or two, so she doesn't have to cook. Dad's out of town on a job so it's just the three of us." Cindy replied.

"Well we should have enough for everyone, so we'll do that." He replied. "Kids the Doctor thanked you for helping Charlie, but I want to add my thanks too; you've all been really good friends with him and I can't tell you how happy that makes me."

"Not half as happy as it makes me Dad," Charlie replied, then leaned over and kissed Cindy's cheek, then did the same to Max and Nick offered his cheek and smiled when he got his. "You two will have to wait until we get out of the car," he told the two girls in the front.

When they pulled into the drive and got, out, Charlie gave the girls their kisses then all of them walked down the street to Kathy's house and were greeting by a surprised and very happy Kathy; especially when she heard the news that they thought the infection was gone. "We just have to wait for the lab tests and then for the medicine to be out of me, to know the final outcome," Charlie told her. "We don't know, I may be completely back to normal or maybe some smaller nighttime problems; we just won't know until then."

"No matter what happens Charlie it'll be nothing compared to what you've been dealing with; we'll pray for the best and deal with whatever the outcome is. I'll be there for you Charlie, no matter what, you know that," she replied, giving his hand a squeeze.

"Well for now, we all need to be here for you Kathy, you're the one that's hurting and will be needing help and all of us are willing to do whatever you need." Charlie said and looked up and got nods from all of the kids in the room.

As they were getting ready to leave, Cindy pulled Charlie aside and whispered in his ear. "Mom has medical appointments all morning tomorrow; if you want to come over and help, Kathy will no doubt need some diaper changes and she will need a sponge bath. Want to help?" then giggled.

"Really?" he asked.

"Yeah and I know she'd like you to wash certain parts for her, she's been antsy all week, because Mom never leaves her alone much. Guaranteed she'd rather you do it than me!" She whispered back.

"What time?" he softly asked.

"Mom is going to leave about 8:00, won't be back until after lunch because she's having an MRI on her head and having the stitches removed, most likely. Then an exam with the doctor."

"Be here at about 8:30 if that's ok," he replied and she just nodded and smiled at him then patted his back as he left.

As soon as he got home, he took his pills and then went upstairs after saying goodbye to the other kids and went to his room. His father spent the evening in his home office, paying bills and doing paperwork from his job and Charlie was soon joined by his sister. "Do I get to show my brother how much I love him tonight Charlie?" she asked sitting down on the edge of his bed, where he was reading.

"Yeah but we can't really do anything until Dad goes to bed; he might stick his head in the door and catch us and that's a definite no-no."

"So can I just sit here and cuddle with you and we'll read together until then?"

When they got over to Kathy's, Cindy met them and led them inside. "Uh... Charlie, Cindy, I think I should talk to Kathy before we do this. Inside, he sat on the edge of the bed and smiled at Kathy. "Hi Kathy, I came in to talk to you before Charlie comes in."

"He's here? Is there some problem with him? God that boy's been through so much."

"No he's fine," he replied smiling and patting her hand, "Right now he's fine anyway. This is about me and you Kathy."

"What about us? I don't understand?"

"Well OK I guess I need to be more direct here. Kathy, Charlie and I are here to help Cindy give you a bath. I know you're going to feel embarrassed about that but I wanted to assure you that there's no reason for you to feel that way."

"You're going to give me a bath?"

"Actually no, Charlie will give you a bath and Cindy and I will help him. <sigh> Kathy, Charlie needs to do this for you so that he feels he's doing something to help you, anything to help you. It's tearing him up inside that he can't find anything to do for you. Cindy suggested that he could do this, since it needs to be done and basically the choices were either Her, Charlie and me or wait until this afternoon and She, Carol and your mother do it. I think of the choices you'd rather have Charlie wash you than any of the rest of us. Am I right on that?"

"I thought so, but the fact of the matter is that he can't do it alone, because he'll need help moving you and that might cause you some pain and to be frank, he's not able to physically move you like that by himself; he'll need help and second if he sees that he caused you pain, he'll lose it emotionally. So that means that Cindy and I will need to help him with you. We'll move you when necessary, but Charlie will be the one washing you."

"So you'll see me naked, that's what you're saying..."

"Yes but I don't want that to bother you. Kathy they had orderlies at the hospital to help move you for the nurses right? Well this is kind of the same deal. I'll be an orderly helping your care giver, Charlie, I'm there only to do what needs to be done so that he can take care of you; same for Cindy in this case. "Thanks Kathy and I'll try my absolute best not to either hurt you or embarrass you. I need to do this to help Charlie as well as you and I'm just doing what I can for both of you."

"Now go get Charlie and Cindy and let's get this done, I stink so bad, it even bothers me, so I need to have this bath." She said smiling and giving his hand another squeeze.

Outside he turned to Charlie, "OK Kathy says she'll be ok with us doing this, we just need to try not to embarrass her in the process. Charlie, she wants Cindy and I to move her when necessary and for you to do the washing and drying. That way if she has any pain when we move her; you won't blame yourself. Don't give me that look Charlie; you know how hard that is for you and she knows it too. So if someone has to cause her pain, even by accident, she wants it to be Cindy and Me and we'll do our best for that not to happen."

Charlie just looked down embarrassed, "You're right Max, I can't handle hurting her even a little."

"That's because you love her Charlie and that's not something to be embarrassed about. She loves you too and doesn't want you to have to go through that." Max replied.

"So I have everything ready in the bathroom, we just need to carry it into her room and get started," Cindy interjected. "Are you two ready?" and both boys nodded.

In Kathy's room, Cindy directed the procedure. "OK first we'll need to put her leg down from the sling, then move her right arm up over head, so that when we roll her over, it's not under her. We'll roll her over onto the right side so that Charlie can wash her back side and then put her flat on her back so the front can be done. That's the minimum amount of movement we can do and still get the job done. Max, please hold her leg cast here, while I unhook the sling and then, I'll help lower her leg. I'm not sure but this may hurt a little. You ready Kathy?"

"Yeah Cindy, just do what you need to and don't worry too much, I'll get though it."

Max cradled the leg cast in his right arm and gently held her under the knee as Cindy unhooked the sling, then she put one hand under the cast and the other under her thigh and they carefully lowered the leg, getting only a little wince from Kathy. Then they moved her down on the bed towards the foot and put her right arm with cast above her head and Cindy reached under her hospital type gown and removed her diaper. "Max we have to roll her towards us now, and we need to make sure we don't put any pressure on her ribs if possible. We just need to get her onto her side, so that Charlie has access to her entire backside. We'll have to hold her in position on her side, so that she can't roll on over and fall off of the bed. Kathy gave a groan when they turned her and Max looked up to see Charlie hugging himself in response. Once they had her on her side, he knelt by her head and gently moved her hair back from her face. "OK there Kathy?"

"Yeah I'm fine Max, thanks," she replied and gave him a little smile.

"She's ok Charlie," he announced and Kathy smiled a little more. "I'll just stay right her by your head Kathy, and keep you from rolling too far," he softly told her. "Then you won't have to worry about me seeing your cute behind," he whispered and she gave a little giggle.

"Thanks Max I needed that," she whispered back and smiled at him.

Charlie sat on the bed with her and untied the gown and moved it away so that her entire backside was exposed and then took a washcloth and started gently at her neck and slowly and carefully washed her. Working downward and then drying the washed area before moving on. "That feels really good Charlie, I'll have to have you do this more often," Kathy told him as she smiled at Max and gave him a wink. Just then the gown started to slip from under her left arm and he caught it and held it up covering her chest.

A few minutes later she blushed very red. "What?" Max asked.

"Give me a yell when he's done and I'll come back in and help getting you back in position." Charlie passed him carrying a fresh bowl of water, "Where're you going?"

When he was finally finished, he took the fresh gown, Cindy handed him and covered her and tied it behind her neck. "All done," he announced as he looked down into her eyes.

"Not quite," Cindy said from behind him. "We'll need Max to help get her back in position and then put a fresh diaper on her."

"Hey Max! You can come in now." He called out and gave Kathy a light kiss before sitting back from her.

Max took her right side and Cindy the left and they moved her back up higher on the bed and then re-suspended her leg in the sling. Charlie was grinning when she released him and he stood up. "OK well I guess we're done then and since it's almost noon, I need to go eat and take my pills and you need to take yours too I guess."

"Yeah I do and then I'll be out of it for at least a couple of hours," she replied and patted his leg. "thanks again Charlie it was really nice. Max you were wonderful too, you made it really easy." She said, looking over at him. "Take good care of my boyfriend here, I'll need him healthy."

"You know I'll do that Kathy he's my friend too you know." Max replied grinning and then hooked his arm through Charlie's. "Let's go loverboy, time for food and pills." And led him from the room, with Cindy following them.
