An Evacuee's Tale

It is September 1939 and like thousands of wartime children, we find 13-year-old Edward Anderson and his best friend Robert Kemp, together with their classmates Jennifer Garland and her twin sister Dawn, being evacuated from their homes in London. They are heading for a quiet fishing village in the English West Country where they will avoid the anticipated German bombing of Britain’s capital city. The boys are billeted in the cottage of Mrs Dalby and her three daughters Elizabeth 14, Gloria 12, and Faith 8, while the girls stay with her neighbour Mrs Bentley, and her daughters, Rebecca 13 and Samantha 9. They find this rural harbour a very different place from the poorest part of East London where they have spent all their lives.

Janet's Classmate

It had been a special treat from the grandparents, Kay and Bob Hawkins, who were at that very first Crystal Lake camp 60 years earlier. Kay had been a junior camp counsellor and Bob had been in her hut. Recalling the rules for boys in a 1950s summer camp, they bemoaned this modern vogue for respecting boys’ modesty. Bob and Kay chuckled when they found out this anniversary camp was to have a special historical theme. Zack and Ellie’s parents agreed with the grandparents to keep that bit as a surprise for when the kids got there.

The first day back at St Luke’s School and a flooded playing field gave a big problem to sort out for the two games teachers, Mr Dawson and Miss Jones. They had to arrange alternatives for the students, especially for that afternoon’s year 9 sports lesson only a few hours away. Miss Jones decided on some still life art in the gym for her girls, but Mr Dawson got the groundsmen to recommission the old open air swimming pool for his boys. As they will not have brought the right kit for water activities, he comes up with the simplest of solutions.
