Introduction

Timothy Radcliffe did not want to go to summer camp. However, his parents were going away on an extended business trip for two months, and he was not able to go with them, so he had no real choice in the matter. His mother had said that it would be good for him to make some more friends his own age and his father ... well his father had said that maybe this would be an opportunity for Tim to finally 'grow up and act his age'.

This was a reference to a little problem that Tim had, a problem that he desperately wanted to keep a family secret. You see, in most respects, Tim was a normal 12-year-old boy, perhaps a bit small for his age, but not by much, perhaps a bit bookish and not as into sports, but not completely. However, the one thing that set Tim apart was that he sometimes still wet his bed at night. Perhaps only one or two nights a week, but it was enough to keep a plastic sheet on his mattress and him from going on sleepovers, or to summer camps, at least up until now!

His parents had tried everything and had finally decided, after a consultation with the family doctor, that he was simply being lazy or careless, or in his dad's favorite words: 'not acting his age'. Tim wished he could stop, but he didn't know what to do about his problem. He really was not looking forward to summer camp, and to sleeping in a cabin with three other boys. Once, when he thought he had stopped wetting, he had gone on a sleepover in the 5th grade. He had wet the bed that night, and had been forced to bribe the other boy to keep him from telling the whole school for the rest of the year. Luckily the kid had moved across the country that summer, but Tim still remembered the utter humiliation of that morning and the expression on the other boy's face when he had discovered Tim's pee-soaked sheets.

The other thing that Tim was not looking forward to was exposing himself to the other boys at camp. Although he was average for development at his age, Tim was very shy about his body, and never let anyone see him in just his underwear, much less naked. However, he knew that at summer camp he would have to change in the cabin in front of the other boys there, and, even worse, he would have to take showers in a whole room full of other boys! As he continued his packing, Tim had already decided that this summer was not going to be much fun. Unfortunately for him, he had no idea just how bad it was going to be.

Chapter 1: Arrival at Camp

After a seemingly endless ride on the camp bus, they arrived at Camp Tawanawaka, deep in the woods and located along the shores of Lake Gunigee. Tim had spent most of the ride getting to know the boy sitting next to him, named Simon, who was also 12 and also going to camp for the first time. The boys exchanged stories and hoped that they might be in the same cabin together (although Tim thought perhaps it might be better if he could have one friend outside his cabin in case anything happened there).

The kids all got off the buses and were lined up in rows to be welcomed by the camp director, Mr. Maddox:

"I want to welcome all you campers here to a great summer at Camp Tawanaka! We have eight fun-filled weeks waiting ahead for you and I'm sure that you will have a great time! First though, I just need to go over a few quick rules. Don't worry, this will not take long. They are posted here on this sign next to me."

The sign read as follows:

Rules for Camp Tawanawaka

1) All campers must be in their cabins by 10.00pm each night. 2) Boys and girls are never allowed inside each other's cabins. 3) No swimming without a lifeguard on duty. 4) No hiking in groups smaller than three. 5) Your counselor should know where you can be found at all times.

"I'm sure that you will all have no problems with these rules, and that we will have lots of fun together," said Mr. Maddox after he had read and explained the rules. "Now if you don't know, our group of boys and girls this summer numbers 96, evenly divided into 24 cabins, ranging in age from 12 to 15. There are 12 boys' cabins and 12 girls' cabins. We also have 12 counselors with us for the summer, divided up into six cabins of two each, who are 16 to 18 years old. In addition, the rest of my staff consists of Mr. Blackly, the cook and Mrs. Jackson, the nurse. If you have health problems of any kind during your stay here, please go and see Mrs. Jackson and she will be able to help you."

"Now it is time to tell you about where you will be staying. Each cabin will have four boys or girls, and you will have an assigned counselor, although that person will be staying in the counselors cabins scattered throughout the camp. I know that this part can be a little boring, but please remain quiet and listen for your name. After I have finished reading the list, please go and find your cabin and settle in. Dinner will be in three hours in the dining hall."

Tim's name was called along with three other boys he did not know in the group for Cabin 11, and he headed off there with his stuff to unpack. He arrived to find that the other boys had already arrived and were talking excitedly with each other. He noticed right away that they all seemed to know each other very well and that they were all older then him, looking about 14 or 15. They turned as he came in and stopped talking and looked at him in silence.

"Hi, um, I'm Tim and I, uh, think I'm in this cabin," Tim stammered as they stared at him.

"Well our other friend Mark was supposed to come with us and we were all going to be in a cabin together," said one of the boys, "so I guess we got stuck with you instead."

"Oh, uh, well sorry I guess," Tim said.

"You can have that bed over in the corner there," another one of the boys said, indicating one of the short camp beds in the small room.

"My name is Greg, and these guys are Bill and Dave," said the third boy who had not spoken until that moment, but had been looking fixedly at Tim with a somewhat strange expression on his face. "How old are you," he said, "I don't think you're our age are you?"

"I'm 12," Tim replied, having already made that assumption.

"Oh, wow, you're like a little baby first year camper!" Bill said with a grimace and a laugh. "I can't believe that they put you in with us. I'm 14 and so is Bill, and Greg is 15."

"I'm not a baby," Tim said, a bit angrily, "and I have just as much right to be here as you do!"

"Hey dude, chill out, we're just kidding with you," said Dave. "Don't worry, I'm sure we'll get along fine. Get your stuff unpacked and then we'll show you around camp."

Tim did as they suggested, but he was still a bit worried about these boys. They spent the next hour unpacking and talking with each other, and although they would occasionally ask him something, they didn't seem all that interested in including him in their conversation. He was also a bit worried about Bill's comments and what that look on Greg's face might have meant.

True to their word however, they did take Tim on a tour of the camp before dinner. It was a pretty decent size site, with the cabins arranged along two edges of the lake with the dock and swimming area in the middle. Also behind the cabins and towards the center of camp were the dining hall, the offices, health lodge, the shower block and the toilets. Further away were the archery range, craft area, and nature hut. The boys told Tim that there were lots of trails that led out into the woods and that the whole camp actually owned about 2,500 acres of land and the whole lake itself.

They went into dinner and were told that for the first night they were required to sit with the members of their cabins, and Tim heard an quiet but audible groan from Bill, but the meal passed without any other comment on the matter. They were sitting with the boys from the cabin next door as well as their counselor, a 16 year old named Luke. Greg, Bill, and Dave seemed to know Luke pretty well from previous years, but Tim was pleased to see that some of the boys in the other cabin were his age and new to camp as well. The food was passable but nothing to write home about.

After dinner, there was a campfire set up in the main area in front of the dining hall, and the kids toasted marshmallows and eventually headed back to their cabins to go to sleep. Tim had a few minutes to talk to his friend Simon from the bus, and found out that he was in a cabin with four other first-year campers who were 12 and 13. It sounded like he was having a great time, and Tim hoped that perhaps Simon might introduce him to these other new friends.

Tim stopped at the toilets on the way back to his cabin and peed as hard as he could, trying to squeeze every last drop out of his bladder in the hope of trying to prevent any problems from occurring in the night. He got back to the cabin before the other boys and pulled on a pair of gym shorts over his underpants and left on his t-shirt. He noticed that when the other boys got back they just stripped down to their boxers and got into bed. He was a little embarrassed that he was still wearing white briefs, but that was all his mother would buy for him, and he was glad that he was already in bed so that they wouldn't see. He fell asleep with mixed feelings, but hoping that things would turn out alright.
