Short Story Challenge (SSC)

A friendly challenge/invitation by Namb:

What’s Your Story
?

Everyone has a story; what’s yours? How would you like to be a published author?

I can’t write, you say? Have you ever tried? Many of us are forced to write about things that are of little interest to us. Have you ever tried to tell a tail about things you do like?

What’s Your Story is a writing challenge to put your ideas down on paper in about 500 words. 500 words is the length of a grade-school essay. You’ve done it before; you can do it again. Except that this time instead of talking about Christopher Columbus, you have a much hotter topic.

I’m very careful with the word, “challenge.” This is not a writing contest. It’s not a competition, there are no judges, there are no prizes (except being published and seeing your name in print) and nobody will be grading your paper. We won’t even count to see if it’s anywhere near 500 words. :). You can do less and we certainly encourage you to do more.

This is simply an invitation to write your story. What do you write about? The old adage “write what you know” certainly applies here. The field is wide open; run in any direction you want.

What are the rules? Well, there really aren’t any. All submissions will be considered and as long as they meet the guidelines for the site, they are fair game.

If you don’t feel like you are ready for “prime time” and would like to have someone take a look at your stories, you can send them to me [email protected]. I’m not a professional editor, but my works have been critiqued by them. Their input helped me with my writing.

Don’t worry, I won’t be too harsh. There’s no place for Grammar Nazis in the challenge. (Although you should consider using the spell  and grammar checker that most text processing programs offer, since they help make your story more readable with very little effort). Usually, I will probably suggest adding white space to make the story more readable. It’s your story; it’s your personality and that will be honored.

Or you can send the stories directly to Cassie [email protected] for publication (if you remember, say that it's for the SSC challenge, and it will be marked as such).

To get the ball rolling, I have a suggested topic. It will be changed from time to time. You can check out the current one at the main page. This suggested topic is just an invitation, a shared idea. If you want to write a SSC short story about a different topic feel free to do so!
