Melissa went back to work till it was time to go home. Barbara Jones was the girl’s teacher; she attended the funeral, in support of her young student. She was invited in by John. As Barbara looked around the living room, she found the conditions on the verge of not good, the kids were watching a kid themed movie.

John and Barbara were in the kitchen talking

Barbara started over to the clothes washer however, She did not push up her sleeves but started bossing John around, She Said “John start sorting the piles of laundry put the darks in this pile and load the machine with all the whites?”

“Then she has paid into the system it may not be the same income coming in as before but it is something more than you have now”

“I guess if she had paid into it, then it’s not a handout. But what else can I do to get help?”

“Well you can open up your house for a boarder to stay with you and your kids, with one bedroom with a shared kitchen, the state will give you a section 8 housing check to allow the boarder to stay, then you can offer a percentage, let’s say half the amount that you got for rent back as payment for services to cook and clean and help raise the kids up.”

“You’re kidding me Miss Jones, the state allows that? What about food”

“Yes they do, Also If you’re willing accept a young mother with a child or two, and offer 2 bedrooms with a shared kitchen space. The state can increase the section 8 allowance, The state also offers food assistance to that person, so any extra mouths to feed are covered, so those kids are not drain to the household finances.”

“Well, I could move both my kids to one bed room then I would have 2 spare bedrooms”

“See that would double the amount of rent coming in. You could be back to where you were before Melissa died,”

John looked around at the other pile of laundry. “Yes I believe I would like you to call her for me”

“John I will, can I ask you a question?’

“Please don’t file that report I can’t let my family fall apart please call your sister and see if she can help me,”

“Okay John I will call her tonight and she will get back to you in a few days. In the meantime make sure Amy gets a good cleaning and shampoo. Remember, you are the Dad here, step up.”

“Yes Barbara I mean Miss Jones. I will try…”

“Well enjoy your evening”

“Goodnight”

“Okay kids, come over here,” John said as the door closed

“What’s wrong dad, why was Miss Jones here and why don’t you have a shirt on and socks” Amy asked

“I have been found out to be a lousy house father, Miss Jones helped me wash clothes and my shirt needed washing so I took it off. However I need help in take care of this household or the government might take you guys away”

“Dad they can’t do that, can they?”

“Yes honey they can unless I turn this mess around and get help”

“Dad, we can help you out yes, Andy we can all help out. Right Andy?” Amy Look towards her brother
