Part 5

"You the girls need a ride to the Zen hostel?"

"Um, we're supposed to be waiting for someone,"  Cathy's voice faltered, unsure whether she was supposed to identify the unknown Sabel or herself by name.

"I'm Jenn," Jenn replied, her voice confident.  "We sure are glad to see you."

"Cool.  Well hop in.  I'm Sabel."  He gestured at his vehicle with a grandiose gesture.  His scraggly blond hair struggled to form into dreadlocks and the beginnings of a beard formed along his lower jaw.  His outfit consisted of a smiling Bob Marley over a tie-died background and long baggy surf shorts.  His feet were bare and quite heavily calloused.  Jenn wondered how he managed to propel the four-wheeled cycle vehicle without some form of foot protection.  The two girls scrambled into the back seat of the yellow-painted contraption.  A cloth canopy was draped over thin metal struts overhead and Sabel pulled himself onto the front driver's seat and stood up tall to get the cycle into motion.

"Um, Sam-Iza said we wouldn't have to worry about sensors?"

Sabel let out an easy laugh, still standing up in the pedals to get the vehicle moving.  "No sensors on this thing!"  His voice mellowed.  "We're against sensors anywhere -- you can be sure there won't be any electronic ones at the center, or any informants either."

He got the vehicle moving at a nice pace and the girls settled down to enjoy the scenery, not wanting to inconvenience Sabel by making him talk while propelling the cycle forward.  They rode around the long curve of Anastasia State Park, past the lighthouse and along the string of seedy motels leading up to the Bridge of Lions.  Sabel had to stand again to get the cycle over the incline of the drawbridge, but obviously enjoyed the coast down the other half of the span.  The spires and towers of historic St. Augustine loomed over them at the bottom of the bridge.

"Some people think this is the heart of the historic Olde City," Sabel explained, "but we're actually headed into some of the older stuff that Flagler didn't manage to knock down for his luxury hotels.  Jenn and Cathy weren't sure what he was talking about, but nodded with interest.  Sabel got the cycle moving again while impatient drivers honked their horns and were forced to slow down by the array of vehicles clogging the historic plaza.  In addition to their cycle there were long sightseeing trams, horse drawn carriages with drivers droning on about the sights of America's oldest city, tiny electric cars that looked like toys and files of tourists on Segways.  After looping around the plaza, Sabel headed south and within minutes they were cycling through much emptier narrow streets hugged tight by ancient buildings with barred windows, shutters, second floor balconies and tiled roofs.  A little farther along and they crossed a long canal and rode alongside what appeared to be a gigantic 16 foot high hedge.  Sabel took an abrupt turn and they found themselves almost magically on the other side of the hedge.

Jenn looked astonished.  "Wow," Cathy exclaimed.

"You liked that?" Sabel laughed.  "It's always a surprise."

It felt like they had exited the other world of the city through some hidden portal.  In front of them was a tall narrow building with odd appendages and balconies and beyond it a vista light shimmering on miles of open water.  Except for a line of boat sheds and fishing boats off in the distance the view was only of sky, water and glistening mudflats: no city, no highways, no bridges.

"But . . . " Jenn stammered.

"Welcome to the Zen Center.  Let's get you some food"

"I hope I'm not making too much of an assumption, but I'm assuming that you two want a room together?  Privacy is at a premium at the center.  I really wish the Pagoda were still open, I'd be so much happier sending you there."

Jenn and Cathy sat across the way from the woman who sat behind a tidy desk squeezed into a very tiny office space.  They each struggled so process the words that seemed that this woman was assuming they were a couple, lovers, lesbians, who wanted a private room, together.

"Um, I guess we're not in Ohio anymore!" Jenn barked out a laugh.

Cathy gaped at her, but decided not to be sarcastic.  Nudity aside, she was still not entirely sure how two women "together" were going to be viewed in this strange new world.

"We're happy to be here for you," I-iz reassured her.

They'd had some confusion understanding her name when she first introduced herself.  Her admittedly unusual moniker was compounded by the southern accent.  My name is "Ah iz" she'd explained when they first sat down in the office.  "As in, here I am."  She'd given them a big grin.  Deciding they didn't get it, she went on.  "It's an homage to my mentor Am.  'I am' seemed too close so I changed it to I is."  Eventually they sorted out that her name was 'I is' (they would have said 'eye is') -- pronounced southern style "Ahhh Izz" and that somehow this was a tribute to someone else named "Am."  Names aside, Cathy and Jenn were thrilled to discover that their relationship seemed to pose no problem and that I-iz wanted to help them.

"The pagoda was womyn only space," I-iz explained, "but Am is getting old and can't keep it up like she used to.  The Zen Center provides a great service and I'm happy to be working here, but, well . . . let's just say it caters to all types.  Just hold your own and don't let anyone give you any bullshit."

Jenn nodded.  So far everyone they'd met had been super nice.  "Um, I was wondering about the stripped thing, the chip?  Sam-Iza said there was a way to get one even though I don't have Florida ID and all that?"

"Yeah, there's ways.  To be honest, that's not my specialty.  Sam-Iza stops by here on a sem-regular basis and you should ask her to introduce you to someone who can handle that.  But," I-iz continued, "I do need to finish registering you and go over the rules. Don't worry, they're basic and there aren't very many."

"That's fine," Cathy assented.  "We're so happy to be welcome anywhere.  The beach was exciting the first night, but . . . "

"I understand, believe me I understand," I-iz laughed.  "So, here's the deal: no violence, no alcohol, no drugs -- not even cigarettes or weed -- on the premises. It's immediate expulsion if you do any of that stuff.  No sexual harassment.  That rule is more vague and more subjective.  Basically, you can do your thing with yourself or any other consenting person, just like you would anywhere else in Florida, but we all have to live here together, so be respectful.  No forced contact, no forced penetration, no rape."  Seeing their faces, I-iz softened her voice, "I'm just telling you like it is.  We get all types and we try to set the boundaries firmly so we don't get problems.  Each person is required to do two hours of volunteer work here at the Center each day.  There's a sign up sheet in the kitchen and plenty of choices: food prep, cooking, washing dishes, cleaning the toilets, scrubbing down the deck, watering plants and lots more.  We also ask for a donation of $5.00 per day per person . . . "

Jenn's face fell. Cathy looked crestfallen.  "We don't have any money," Cathy began.

"It's my fault," Jenn interrupted, "I couldn't wait to get in the ocean and . . . "

"We looked everywhere, but we couldn't find . . . "

"Girls, girls, girls."  I-iz held up her hands.  "Slow down.  If you can't pay cash -- and lots of people can't, at first -- we have agreements with places around here where you can volunteer and the organization will give us a donation."

"But, if I don't have a chip and I'm naked how can I even leave the premises?"  Jenn asked.

"You'll have to work that out yourselves, but as far as we're concerned it doesn't matter which of you does what work.  If you don't have cash, you'll have to put in an additional four hours of volunteer work -- that's two hours for each of you -- five days a week at one of our cooperating organizations."

Jenn looked at Cathy.  Cathy shrugged.  "So the total per day is 8 hours per day?"

"Between what you need to do here and elsewhere, it would be 8 hours per day for the both of you on weekdays and 4 hours per day for the both of you on weekends."

"Okay, we'll work it out," Cathy replied.

"In that case, I just need each of you to put your name down on this form and I'll see if I can find you the nicest room in the palace."  I-iz winked at them and Cathy and Jenn couldn't help but grin back.

They followed I-iz up a winding set of external wooden steps, across a broad deck set against the side of the building and up another set of wooden steps.  The center of the building was built of some type of grey stone or concrete with bits of shell in it, tall and narrow like a blocky tower.  All sorts of decks and balconies and platforms jutted out from the central structure, linked together by simple, but solidly built, stairways.

"That's coquina," I-iz explained, seeing Cathy examining the exterior of the building.  "It's blocks of seashells that have hardened together, almost like natural cement.  A lot of St. Augustine is built from it, including the fort.  She waved her hand northward, presumably in the direction of the Castillo.  "Oh, here's your room."  I-iz stopped right where they were, halfway up a wooden staircase, and opened a narrow door with a small window set into it.  I-iz squeezed in first.

"Golly!"  Jenn just stood at the entrance to the room, her eyes filled with the vista in front of her.

"Um, honey," Cathy nudged her.

"Oh, I'm sorry." Jenn moved aside to let her friend into the room.  "Can you believe this?"

The winding stairway and the narrow entrance and not prepared them for the room itself.  Actually, Jenn had hardly pulled her eyes away from the view to examine the room itself, which was pleasant enough, but hardly remarkable.  The vantage point was something else altogether.  The room was long and narrow, but the far end was entirely glass, from floor to ceiling, and light poured in from the vast expanse of water that stretched off into the distance, blending into saltwater marshes, and flat grasslands.

I-iz stood there beaming.  "It's one of the best rooms in the whole place, and look."  She walked to the end of the room and slid open the glass.  All three walked out onto a wooden balcony that jutted out from the tower.  "This is a totally private balcony.  Nobody can see you here, not from up above -- or from down below. If it were me, I'd know exactly what to do out here."  She laughed good-naturedly.

I-iz had left them on their own, and following her suggestion they had known exactly what to do on their airy perch.  Suspended off a tower between water and sky, the two lovers had indulged their passions, relieved to be settled -- even if temporarily -- in Florida.

"Cathy?"

"Hmmm?"

"What about my stripped chip?"

"We'll figure it out."

"I'm not wearing clothes ever again."

"I know."

"Do you mind doing the outside work until I am able to go everywhere?"

"Don't worry, honey. it's all going to work out."

"Just hold me."

Cathy nudged the small of Jenn's back with her hand, guiding her onto the balcony.  Light was just beginning to filter under the clouds, transforming the late afternoon overcast gray into sudden brightness.  Cathy pulled Jenn into herself, her breasts and belly and thighs nestled into the muscular hills and hollows of Jenn's shoulder blades, back, buttocks and legs.  Her arms wrapped around Jenn's belly and hands found their way in caressing circles along the slight fuzz that coated Jenn's skin like the most delectable of peaches.  Cathy's lips found the tops of Jenn's shoulders and planted warm kisses, fingers grazed the tender curve along the bottom of Jenn's breasts, a wandering toe slide up the side of Jenn's right calf, more kisses.

Jenn let herself be seduced once again by her lover, the light now yellow spilling out between clouds below and brilliantly reflecting sheen of water below.  The light strummed in the long horizontal space like the vibration of a new string -- not yet mellowed -- on a guitar, a slight buzz, a growl, the impatience of the loved at the teasing slowness of the lover.  Enjoying the tension, but knowing that her own impatience would win out as well, Cathy slowing lowered the two of them to the wooden deck and let her fingers wander closer to the heat emanating from Jenn's loins.

Jenn lost all pretense at patience and Cathy laughed out loud, glad to be done with seduction and on to the serious job of pleasuring her girlfriend.  She plunged her fingers up into Jenn's vagina, curling two fingers up onto that special place right up front and inside the opening and vibrated them until Jenn squealed with glee.  The girls forgot all pretense of worry and howled and laughed and yelped their way through multiple orgasms as the sky burned into an all-pervading gold that filled the air, shone down from the clouds and glinted blindingly off the water below.  As Jenn let herself down from her last screaming climax and nestled into Cathy's equally pleasured body the sky slowly transformed into a darker pink and then purple as the day spent itself away in splendor.
