PART 7

"Can't we do something just the two of us tonight?" Jenn could hear the begging in her voice. Why couldn't she just shut up! She knew she was driving Cathy away with her mix of desperation and depression. I'm being too clingy, she chastised herself.

"I'll be back in an hour, I promise," Cathy stated. She gave Jenn a brief kiss and closed the door behind her. Jenn could hear the clump of Cathy's workbooks on the wooden stairs as she headed down to Anthony's room. She hadn't even taken off her boots--just stopped by their tower room after getting home and said she needed to go over plans for tomorrow's work schedule. Jenn sighed and looked out at the changing colors of evening light streaming across the vast space outside. Struggling not to notice the void inside herself, Jenn curled up and fell asleep.

When she awoke she couldn't remember where she was. At the farmhouse, the beach, where was Cathy? She reached out and felt empty space. The room was dark and it felt late. Cathy! She hadn't come back. Jenn rolled off the bed and padded across the floor. Where was Anthony's room anyway? Why hadn't Cathy told her which one it was--and why wasn't she back anyway? Way more than an hour had to have passed. Jenn went down the stairs, pausing at each landing and listening for voices. Soon enough she reached the bottom and was about to climb the stairs back to their room again when she paused.

"I just have to take care of some business in New Orleans." It was Anthony's voice. "You know I love you--I'll be back before you know it." But who was he talking to?

"You know that isn't the problem--all your friends."

"No, that's all over. You're the one I want to be with."

"Anthony, for once will you listen to me! I just don't like it when you blame me for all the problems in your life."

"That's what I'm trying to tell you! You're the center of my life!!!"

Sam-Iza let out a sound that sounded half-way between a sob and a laugh. Jenn didn't have a clue what was going on, but she didn't want to be eavesdropping any more on what seemed like an intense conversation. She entered the room as if she'd just come down the stairs.

"Hi everyone," she said, feigning a yawn. "What time is it anyway? Cathy said she was going down to your room and I must have fallen asleep."

Sam-Iza looked at Anthony curiously. "Oh, yeah, we were just going over some work plans." Anthony's voice was incongruously cheerful and way too casual. He grinned and waved his massive mane of blond hair around the room. Jenn tried to stifle her annoyance.

At that moment Cathy came down the stairs. "There you are!" she exclaimed to Jenn. "Anthony? I thought you were . . . oh, hi Sam-Iza, how are you?"

"Maybe we could all take a walk to St. George Street and get tacos," Anthony suggested.

"I'm so glad you're down here, Jenn. I fell asleep after . . . well, when I got to our room you weren't there."

"I fell asleep, too. That's why I came looking for you. It must have been hours ago that you left."

"Tacos anyone?" Anthony suggested enthusiastically.

Sam-Iza had been watching closely. "Anthony's just been telling me that I am the sole, center, love of his life . . . once again. Am I a fool to fall for that, Cathy?"

Cathy looked at Jenn and then at Sam-Iza. "You lying crock of shit!" She picked a ceramic pitcher full of wilting wildflowers off of the nearest table and hurled it at Anthony's massive head of hair. Broken pottery scattered across the floor. "You leave me sleeping in your room and come down and make a fool of me?"

"I take it that Anthony is up to his old tricks?" Sam-Iza postulated, her voice mild but with a rising undercurrent of ire.

"Old tricks, new tricks, what do I know," Cathy yelled. "That's it between us you asshole!" Cathy picked up a mason jar with yet more wilting flowers off the next table and hurled it at Anthony. Her aim was uncharacteristically bad and she missed again. Sherds of glass slid across the floor.

"Don't come looking for me until you can bring yourself to be honest," Sam-Iza declared. "I'm sure the rest of you have things to work out." She turned and left, only the loud stomping of her feet on the floor and the steps outside betraying her true emotions.

Anthony cast a quick look of desperation at Cathy and hastened after the most recently proclaimed love and center of his life. Jenn listened to the rising voices arguing outside but quickly turned her attention to her own erstwhile center of life.

"Cathy . . ." her voice caught in her throat. "You fucking piece of shit!" she screamed at the top of her voice.

"Jenn, please, let me explain," Cathy implored.

"Explain what? I'm the fool, that's what! How could I not have seen it . . . You lying bitch!"

"Anthony . . . I mean . . . we spent so much time working together, and, well, one thing led to another."

"I mean so little to you, Cathy? All those hours alone up in that room, what was supposed to be 'our' room, and you're fucking him this whole time?"

"We were working . . . " Cathy stated lamely.

"And fucking, working and fucking, fucking and working," Jenn cavorted around the room, chanting the words in a little singsong.

"I thought he was getting you a chip, and then you could go anywhere you wanted and . . . "

"You fucking thought he was getting me a chip? Really? What a fool I have been, seriously." Jenn sat down and let out a sob. "Now what am I going to do. Here I am in Florida, no money, no ID, no clothes!" she ended with her voice rising up into a wail. "God, Cathy, what would your mom think? Do you ever think about anyone except yourself?"

"What's my mom got to do with this?" Cathy retorted, glad to have a reason to be angry at Jenn. "You fucking keep her out of this, you understand?"

"Girls, girls, girls. Don't fight. You love each other!"

Jenn looked up, the insult she was about to hurl at Cathy stuck in her throat. Cathy turned abruptly. Sitting across the room, half in shadow at one of the round tables was the old woman. How long had she been here?

"Um . . . " Cathy didn't know what to say.

"I've been watching you for weeks. You love each other so much!"

Jenn got up and walked across the room, "may I?" she asked, indicating the seat across the table from the older woman.

"Sit yourself down, hon, it's a freedom country." The old woman laughed to herself. "That's an old joke; don't mind me."

"I'm Jenn."

Not to be left out Cathy pulled a chair over and sat down next to the two other women--the one young and her lover, the other older and, "I'm Cathy" she introduced herself.

"Cathy and Jenn," the woman said dreamily. "Cathy and Jenn; such nice names. I'm Amanda."

"Amanda?" Cathy repeated. She glanced at Jenn in her usual way, as if all was well between them and they could simply understand one another telepathically. "Do you know my mom?"

"Who would your mom be, honey child?"

"She doesn't live here. She's in Ohio, but she said she had a friend named Amanda. We were supposed to find her . . . but . . . we never did, unless?"

"Amanda, that's my name. I used to live in Ohio. I came down to Florida and life is like that, one thing after another and this is where I stayed."

"But, we asked everyone if they knew Amanda,"

"I'm not sure," the older woman ruminated, "I think they know me by another name."

"My mother's name," Cathy said with a kindness that made Jenn want to wrap her arms around her and kiss her, "Carmen. She said you two were friends for ever so long, that you took the Green Tortoise bus and had adventures together."

Jenn realized with a start that she didn't even know Cathy's mother's name. To her she'd always been Cathy's mom, or just 'mom'--but Amanda seemed to know her without even a pause.

"Carmen, oh, Carmen. We always had a good time always a good time. We were like you two together, two young women on the cusp of life, just waiting to take it by the horns and live! I don't know why she doesn't hitchhike on down here and cavort on the beach with me. I could take her to the Silver Dollar . . . you know, it's down the coast after the last big house." Amanda looked at them with bright eyes, glittering in the low light of the half-dark room.

"Wow, you know my mom," Cathy exclaimed nearly under her breath.

"You're Amanda," Jenn murmured in awe, the louder, "You don't know anything about how I could get stripped, do you?"

"Well you're naked, young 'un," Amanda laughed, "but--I know, I know--it's not the same as stripped. Sure, I can get you one of those chips. When do you need it? I just need to contact my friend up at the lodge in Vilano."

"You really can get me a chip!" Jenn said in amazement. "I was just hoping against hope!"

"You came all this way to live life naked, you should be stripped," Amanda said with conviction. "Don't you worry. The network takes care if its own. Those ladies have all sorts of connections."

Jenn lay on the beach, her naked body soaking in sunlight. She watched Cathy emerge out of the surf and licked her lips in anticipation, the taste of salt a tonic to her desire. Dripping sparkles of light Cathy ran up the slope of sand. Cathy paused, naked, and teased with her eyes. In her heightened state of arousal Jenn every detail of her lover's body was in sharpened focus: every drop of water, clinging to each golden hair of Cathy's body, every sensory cell of skin awaiting contact. Cathy lowered herself on strong arms and held herself just inches above Jenn's naked skin. She lowered her lips to Jenn's, their kiss the only direct touch, tingling warmth filling the gap between their bodies. Cathy took her time kissing Jenn, during a thorough job of touching each bit of lip to lip, opening Jenn with her tongue, caressing the wet depths of Jenn's mouth, fondling her tongue. Jenn felt the first nearly imperceptible touch of nipple on nipple as a spark through her body. With exquisite control Cathy circled Jenn's nipples with her own until each one stood up stiff within its aureole.

Jenn moaned around Cathy's tongue, begging her to ravish her, but Cathy kept to her slow, teasing seduction of her girlfriend. I-iz had assured her that she could go naked on the beach--stripped or not--and that there were no sensors or monitors to pick up that she had no chip. Cathy was determined to make things up to her lover. A long slow ravishment would go a long way, she was sure, toward working things out when it came to the inevitable talk.

Cathy lowered her belly another inch until hair tips tickled hair tips along Jenn's abdomen. She undulated her muscles and let skin touch skin for seconds at a time. She could feel the heat welling up from between Jenn's legs and imagined the labia glistening as the unfolded, her lover's body aching to be touched and sucked and probed. Jenn groaned again with longing.

Unwilling to put clothes back on, and even less willing to face the restrictions of Ohio--even temporarily--Jenn had stayed in Florida. The chip was a wondrous gift and Jenn reveled in walking naked the streets of St. Augustine and exploring the beaches. With Amanda's introduction she stayed at the Pagoda in Vilano and met some of the remarkable womyn who had provided her the black market chip that made her stripped future possible. She liked these fiery, stubborn, eccentric womyn--mostly older, but with a sprinkling of younger participants--who provided a haven against the male-dominated world. Florida was not Paradise. Jenn only now realized that she'd harbored a dream that all the ills of the world would be absent in this place. Can you believe I'd think there would be a perfect world based on the writings of a dirty old man? She laughed at her ability to find hope in the most unlikely of places.

Cathy, meanwhile, had escorted Amanda back to Ohio.

"She wants to see her again after all these years," Cathy argued. "Besides, it will be good to see my mom, let her know that . . . well, it will also give you, me, us . . . I just want everything to be good between us."

"Hmmm," Jenn murmured, not yet ready to forgive Cathy. "We have a lot to discuss. You know that, right?"

"Yeah, I get it," Cathy reluctantly agreed. "But, remember what Amanda said, that we love each other, not to forget that?"

"I love you," Jenn asserted. "I will always love you. I'm talking about our relationship. They aren't the same thing."

So Cathy had taken Amanda on the bus, retracing her recent trip and Amanda's from long ago. The two women, Cathy's mom--Carmen--and Amanda, had looked at one another with glistening eyes, held hands and walked into the house.

"It's so weird," Cathy told Jenn. "They just sat down at the table as if they were resuming a conversation from earlier that day. I don't even know if they realized that any time had passed at all. I left them content, happy and living together as if they had been together their whole lives. I wish . . . " Cathy's voice trailed off.

"Just kiss me," Jenn demanded.

Cathy kissed Jenn all down her torso, giving special attention to each nipple, licking down into her belly button and trailing across her pubic mound before devoting herself fully to Jenn's delicious clitoris, fingers probing deep into the hot regions inside and simmering her slowly into a raging boil that spilled out into an orgasm that built in intensity until both of them were filled with a passion that was almost too intense to bear.

Carmen woke to the touch of a breeze wafting through the window, heavy with the scent of dew on meadow grass. She was unsurprised but delighted to find her friend Amanda next to her in the tangle of worn linen sheets. The sound of crickets hummed through the air. She touched Amanda with the tip of her finger and looked into her lover's faded blue eyes as they fluttered awake behind wisps of white hair. Without words they understood and followed, out the door and across the field.

The grass flicks their bare legs. They head to their secret spot, the place they used to go as if yesterday, as if in a different lifetime, as if in a dream. You could pass so close and not see it, this hollow where the land dips down, tall grass giving way to moss. A round clear pond reflects the changing light of the sky, now cloud, now moonlight, as if a light from under the ground itself were shining forth.

The two wade carefully to a flat stone in the center of the pool. In this eye of the world the ageless women touch mouth to mouth, lips to lips, melting into one another's embrace. Their bodies meet, soft and wrinkled skin across bones yet strong from decades of labor, in a slow and patient exploration that knows no urgency. Fingers, palms, toes, shins, cheeks, all the body awake, alive, in this moment, on this rock dappled with cloud-flecked moonlight in the eye of the world.
