Making The Team

“Can’t we go one more time?” Mark asked.

“Come on, we played the best of three and you lost, then you wanted best of five and you lost that, then best of ten and now you have six losses. Just give up and pay the price.” Brad had listened to his neighbor brag constantly about how good he was at shooting baskets and how unfair it was that he didn’t make the middle school basketball team and finally told him to shut up or put up.

“But, I, uh, what if I get caught?” Mark hadn’t really ever figured he would lose so the price didn’t concern him. But now he had to face the music. And there was no way out.

“If you get caught then you’d better have a good story in mind for why you have a naked picture of yourself pasted to the inside of your locker door.” The bet had been simple. They each had a picture of the other one naked with a boner. The loser had to print the picture and tape it inside his locker for a full week. “We’ll go to your room and print it out and then we can delete the pictures.”

Since they each had a picture, the loser couldn’t back out.

“One more shot,” Mark asked again.

Brad thought about it for a second. The ‘one more time’ was getting boring. He wanted to end it. Besides, with the score at 6 to 5 Mark wasn’t that far from beating him.

“I’ll do another dare, plus the picture dare,” Mark said. His ears were burning with the thought of what would happen if he lost.

Brad thought about it a little more before reaching for his backpack. He took out a piece of paper and started writing. It took a few minutes, but when he was finished he handed it to Mark.

“I’ll let you try again, but if you lose you have to do this dare too. And no more tries if you lose.”

Mark read the paper and gasped. It was simple, and dangerous, and disgusting. But all he had to do was make two more baskets than Brad did and he would win and it would be Brad who would be horribly embarrassed. “Let’s do it,” Mark said with confidence.

Brad picked up the ball and shot from the end of his range. The ball hit the front of the rim and came right back to Mark, who moved to where Brad had shot from and put the ball right through the net.

“I win!” Mark said.

“Not quite, we’re only tied. The next one to miss loses.”

“And if you lose you have to do both dares, right?” Mark asked.

“Just pick your spot and shoot,” Brad said. He was angry for getting greedy instead of recognizing that Mark was getting hot and making more shots. Now he needed to concentrate or he’d suffer the embarrassment of two dares plus losing to Mark.

They went back and forth, hitting and missing in equal fashion. The score went to 14 each when Mark missed an easy layup.

“I’ve got you now,” Brad said with confidence as he drove to the basket. He put the ball up and watched as it circled the rim three times before coming out. He couldn’t believe he had just missed an uncontested layup.

Mark took the rebound and made a left-handed hook from the top of the key. Feeling the pressure now, Brad took a moment to visualize the shot before attempting it. He had made it before, but it was not an easy shot.

The ball hit the backboard and bounced off the front of the rim before going in. Pleased with himself, Brad passed the ball to Mark.

“Any chance of calling a tie game and nobody does the dares?” Mark asked.

“Two more shots,” Brad answered. “If we’re still tied after that we’ll call it a draw.”

Mark attempted the same shot, but missed. Again, Brad visualized the shot before putting it up. Last time he’d been just a touch too strong and had almost lost the match because if it, so he put more arc on the ball this time and smiled as he released it, knowing it was a perfect shot. Mark’s jaw dropped as the ball hit nothing but net.

“That’s my point,” Brad said as he collected his ball. “We’re done. You played better than I thought, but you still lost. I’ll see you tomorrow if you still want me to talk to the coach about another tryout. And if you shoot as good than as you did tonight you just might make it.”

“I don’t know,” Mark said thinking about it. He really wanted another shot at making the team, but not at this risk.

“If you aren’t there then you can forget about ever making the team here because I’ll tell everyone you chickened out after accepting a dare.”

“You’ll really talk to the coach?” Mark asked.

“I’ll not only talk to him, I’ll tell him you nearly beat me in a shootout. Dave Evans is moving, so you’ve got a real good chance to be on the team, but I’ll only put in a good word for you if you complete what I wrote on the paper.”

Mark stood frozen to the ground as Brad walked home. The dare was terrible. If he got caught he’d probably be suspended and wouldn’t be able to try out for the team anyway. But what if he could do it? During the last tryout he was sick, running a fever and still was the last one cut. Maybe the risk was worth it.

Mark went home to set it up. He had to sell it just right to get his brother to agree to it. And then he had to hope like hell that his brother didn’t cheat.

The next morning on the bus Mark sat next to Brad and told him he was going to do it. “It’ll be near the end of last period,” he said.

“Who’s going to move your clothes to the pond?” Brad asked. He was somewhat surprised to hear that Mark wasn’t going to chicken out, but then again, he knew how much Mark wanted to be on the team.

“Matt,” answered Mark. “I know what you’re thinking, but it had to be somebody I knew and I’m pretty sure I can trust him. I told him ten minutes and I’ll be there.”

“It should only take you two or three minutes, why so much longer?”

“In case I have to hide, I wanted some margin. If I’m late, he leaves with my clothes. I don’t have a plan for what to do if that happens.”

“What if he just takes your clothes and goes back to class until the period is over?”

“Nobody who I chose I had that risk. At least with Matt I know where he sleeps. I don’t think he’ll leave early. I also know he won’t wait a second longer.”

“Okay, I’ll be around. You do this and I’ll do all I can to get you what you want.” He handed the picture he had printed of Mark. “Don’t forget, this hangs in your locker until Monday morning.”

Mark quickly put the picture inside a binder. Once in school he waited until there was nobody next to him and taped the picture inside the door. He only need to open his locker three more times that day and would just have to wait until nobody was looking and he’d be fine.

The school day was wasted for Mark as he worried about what he was about to do. Finally, it was time. He met his brother in the boy’s room next to room 110.

“Are you really sure about this?” Matt asked.

“Yeah, this is a piece of cake. And remember, if I do it in time, you have to do it next week. Just don’t leave early.”

“Once you say go I’ll give you exactly 10 minutes to the second. After that, even if I see you coming I’ll leave. So you have to be there at the pond on time. What are you going to do if you’re late?”

“I won’t be, so I’m not worried about it. Just make sure you’re there and don’t leave early.” Mark had been stripping as they talked. He had to run naked down the hall, to the dog leg, and then out to the biology courtyard in the center of school. In the center of the courtyard was a fish pond, if he was there in ten minutes his brother would be there with his clothes. If not—Mark refused to consider that.

There were three routes. The shortest was down the two halls and directly into the courtyard. However, the front of the courtyard contained flowers and grasses and wouldn’t provide any hiding spots. Plus, the school was three stories high and anyone looking out a window would be able to see him.

The longer path met running out to the nearest outside door, around the outside of the school to the back, where he would re-enter the school and pass directly to the back of the courtyard. The courtyard there was ferns and brush that would provide hiding places and cover from even the third story windows. However, outside the school was all grass and sidewalks and he would be visible from the houses that bordered the school.

The third path’s distance was between the first two, but it meant going through the entire first floor hallways all the way around to the back of the school. It kept him protected from being seen outside but increased the likelihood of meeting somebody going to the bathrooms along the two side halls. But it was the path he had chosen.

“I can’t believe you’re doing this,” Matt said as his brother tightened the laces on his sneakers.

“Yeah, well in three minutes you can sweat about it all weekend because Monday it’ll be your turn. You ready?”

Matt laughed as he gathered Mark’s clothes and put them in a bag. “Say when,” he said. He had set his watch in the stopwatch function and was ready to press the button.

Mark almost couldn’t say it, but he knew that his brother wouldn’t let him chicken out at this point. And his brother now had his clothes.

“See you in a few,” he said as he pushed open the door to the hallway and made sure it was empty. “Go!” he said and took off down the hallway. His brother was right behind him until they reached the main hallway in the front of the school, where Matt turned to the right and entered the courtyard while Mark continued straight ahead.

As he passed the front doors he realized how lucky he was—Janet Hopper, who was in his class, was going down the steps with her mom, off to a doctor’s appointment. If he had been thirty seconds earlier getting here he would have already been caught.

At the end of the main hall he slowed, knowing that there were bathrooms just around the corner. And sure enough, he could hear two boys talking around the corner. He stopped and peaked around the corner.

Two eighth grade boys were leaning against the wall talking. As Mark listened, he heard one say, “Well, I guess we’d better get to the office.”

“Shit,” Mark said to himself. To get to the office they’d have to go down the hallway Mark had just run through. There was no place to hide; all he could do was run back towards the main entrance. And he had to move fast as the boys were only a little ways from the corner.

He decided he’d have to change plans and go into the courtyard from the front and risk being seen from the windows. However, as he go the front he saw a class of sixth graders had just gone in to the courtyard, which cut that off as a path.

With only seconds before the older boys came around the corner and saw him, Mark took the only path he could and exited the building at the main entrance, right in front of the school!

He looked at the street and saw two cars waiting to turn in to the parking lot and he knew he out of luck. Except for the planters—two very large planters right at the bottom of the steps.

He took the one on the right and hide behind it, which protected him from the parking lot but left him totally exposed from anyone leaving the school.

The first car pulled into the parking lot and parked, but the second car pulled up right in front of the school and stopped there. The passenger door opened and another classmate of Mark’s, Ryan Winger, got out.

Mark was trapped. If he went around the side of the planter one of the two drivers of the cars was bound to see him, but if he remained where he was Ryan couldn’t miss him. He decided that he’d rather be seen by Ryan than an adult and pushed up against the planter as hard as he could.

Ryan passed five feet away from him and never looked to his side. Once he was in the school his parent drove off. Mark peered around the planter and saw the other car was still parked there with the engine running. He had to make up his mind to either go back in the front of the school and hope the older boys had made it to the office and that Ryan was on his way to class, or to just let the driver of the car see him running naked around the outside of the school.

He chose the front door. As he got to the main hallway he could still hear the sixth grade class getting a lesson on pollination, so he turned left and went back to the end of the hall.

This time, the hallway towards the back of the school was empty, but just as he reached the bathrooms a classroom door opened. Mark pushed into the boy’s room and rand to a stall.

The door opened right behind him and someone went into the stall next to the one Mark was in.

Mark had no idea how much time had passed, but he knew he was running out of any margin. He got up and opened the stall door, but just then somebody else came in and went to the urinal. Mark closed the stall door and waited again.

The boy at the urinal finished and washed his hands and Mark got ready to leave, but then the kid in the stall next to him started pulling off toilet paper. Mark knew that he couldn’t get to the end of the hallway before the kid was done, so he had to wait some more.

Finally the bathroom was empty and Mark quickly made his way to the hall door, where he listened before opening the door. Hearing no sound, he pushed it open and began running towards the back of the school.

As he passed room 180 he saw someone standing next to the door just in time to stop. He had to crawl past the door to keep from being seen before he could continue his journey.

Finally he was at the back of the school. One more hallway and then he could enter the courtyard and get to his brother before it was too late.

He was nearly to the fish pond when he heard an adult voice say, “Okay, the bell is going to ring in about 1 minute, so let’s exit out the back and you are all dismissed.”

Twenty five kids were suddenly running straight towards Mark, who hid as best he could inside some hedge-like bushes.

The kids, who were happy to have been released before the bell rang, were in a hurry to get by. All of them except for two girls, who were walking along talking to the teacher, who stopped twice to point out a plant and give them a description of it. He stopped right in front of Mark but fortunately for Mark he talked about the bushed on the other side.

Suddenly it occurred to Mark that if the bell was going to ring in one minute his life was already over. He had left the bathroom with his brother no later than 2:45, which meant that he was already four minutes past the ten minute point at which Matt was free to leave with his clothes.

Then the bell rang. “Make that five minutes too late,” Mark said to himself. Worse yet, a lot of kids who had classes or lockers in the back of the school took the shortcut through the courtyard, so it was filling up with kids again.

Mark was stuck here naked with no hope of escaping unseen and everyone in school would forever talk about seeing him naked in school. He’d never live it down.

“Mark, I know you’re around here somewhere, I’ve got something for you.” It was Brad’s voice.

“Here,” he whispered twice until Brad heard him and came over.

“You’re brother actually waited until just before the class passed him before heading for the front. He’s probably a quarter of the way home by now.”

“Do you have anything I can wear?” Mark asked in desperation. “Matt has all my clothes.”

“Shhhh, not so loud, there are kids all around,” Brad said. “All I have is this,” he said, passing something through the hedge. “All you have to do is leave past the fish pond and you win, I’ll talk to the coach at Saturday practice. You should come too. Good luck getting home.”

Brad turned and walked off. Hoping for boxers or shorts or something, Mark looked at what Brad had given him.

It was a ski mask. It had two eye opening and a mouth opening. It was useless. Except—

He couldn’t use it to cover his nakedness, everyone would still see his face and his bare butt. But if he put it on, nobody would know who he was! All anyone would know was that a kid streaked through the school and then home!

It would still be horribly embarrassing, but at least he would be protected from being teased because nobody would know it was him. He put the mask on, gathered all the courage he could, and pushed his way out and started running.

Pushing his way through kids he got to the flowers and grass area before the cheering and yelling started. Feeling his dick rising to the occasion, he ran as hard as he dared out of the courtyard, across the main hallway, and out the front door.

The car he was worried about was still there, and the busses were in the bus lane with kids getting on board as Mark dashed down the steps and across the grass. Next he ran across School Street (with horns blaring because he didn’t look for an opening, thank god he didn’t get hit by a car!) and then down his street.

The sidewalks were full of kids, and they had all turned to see what the cheering and horns were for only to see a naked boy with an erection and wearing a ski mask running towards them.

Mark pretended he was alone and just kept on running. Of course, once he reached his house everyone would know it was him, so he needed a plan.

But no plan came to mind. The only thought he could hold was getting to his house and slamming the door behind him.

It was Matt who came through. Four houses before his he shouted out to his brother and held up the bag of clothes. Mark didn’t hesitate but followed his brother into the backyard of the Darby’s house. His brother dumped out the clothes and Mark dressed as quickly as he could.

“Don’t go that way,” Matt said as Mark started to run towards home. “Go the other way for four houses or more before you come back out to the street. Then just walk home. And take off the stupid ski mask first!”

Mark thanked his brother and did as he suggested, joining the other kids who were walking home still laughing at the streaker who had run past them. As much as he still wanted to run to his house and slam the door behind him, he walked at a normal pace until he was inside. Then he ran upstairs to his room and closed the door.

Everyone had seen him naked, but at least none of them knew it was him. It was just some stranger who dared to run naked down the street. His dignity would remain intact as far as the kids at school knew, even if he still felt terrible.

The next day Brad came by and invited him to go to practice. When they got there Brad had a private conversation with the coach and when they were done the coach called Mark over.

“I hear you’re a good outside shooter,” the coach said. “And, word on the street is that you’re a fast runner too.”

“Uh, well, I can shoot, but I don’t know about the running, I mean, I don’t do a lot of it,” Mark said, wondering what Brad had said to the coach.

“Well, I appreciate your school spirit, but maybe next time you go for a run and don’t want people to know who you are you‘ll wear different shoes.”

Mark looked down and noticed that one shoe had yellow laces and the other shoe had green laces. He looked at the uniforms of the kids practicing and saw that the colors were gold and green. And then it hit him—everyone, even the coach, knew that he was the streaker.

“Let’s see how good you can shoot when you’re being defended,” the coach said.

After a long practice the coach held a meeting with the team that excluded Mark, who waited while they discussed him. It only took a few minutes before Brad came over and said, “Congratulations, you got your wish. You’re on the team streaker.”

The next Monday he feared going to school, knowing he would be ripe for teasing. But much to his surprise, other than his new nickname, he wasn’t really teased. Instead, many kids, even more than a few girls, appreciated his courage and daring.

And besides, he could now look forward to watching his brother make the same trip.

He was so happy with the way things turned out that he didn’t even stop and think before opening his locker with a crowd of kids around him. Until everyone saw the picture taped to the inside of the door.

(The End)
