                                        Andrew Roller Presents

                                                GIRL PATROL

                                                Chapter Ten

They walked through the field, along an old winding dirt road lined
with trees. As they walked the moon began to rise. They stopped and
watched it for a while, then walked on, holding hands now, listening to the
rustling of the trees above them. When it seemed to him that the time
was right Vlad looked over at Esmelda and said,
ÒYour sisterÕs dead.Ó The woman stopped, her face pale in the
moonlight. He felt her hand pull against his a little, then hang, as if
unwilling. Gradually the pressure of her fingers increased within his
clasping hand until she seemed to be holding him, squeezing him finally.
Vlad watched her, watched the trees, feeling her hand as it clung to him.
ÒItÕs for the best,Ó Esmelda said at last. She let out a small laugh.
ÒFaith didnÕt want to taste the kiss and now sheÕs dead.Ó
ÒWe gave her the choice,Ó Vlad said to Esmelda.
ÒYes, we gave her the choice,Ó Esmelda agreed, nodding. They walked
on. As they walked the moon rose higher and its light grew brighter,
flooding the fields. However close around Vlad and Esmelda, shadows
began to form. At first one might have thought the shadows were being
cast by the trees for, indeed, the old trees did cast shadows. But as Vlad
and Esmelda walked on the shadows flitted along with them, and gradually
began to assume human form.
ÒThe wraith vampires are here,Ó Vlad said at last, nodding at one of
them as his visage, shot through with moonlight, came into view.
ÒHow are you all doing this evening?Ó Esmelda said to the vampires,
looking at them and through them at the same time, for they were like
human-shaped wisps of smoke. There, but not there. One of them moved
forward from where he had been following, behind them. He had a human
hand of substance and gripped in that hand was a weapon from the future.
ÒThatÕs FaithÕs!Ó Esmelda said, stopping suddenly. The creature
offered her the gun. Esmelda took it, held it. The gun was about the size
of a shotgun, sawed off. It had a pistol grip and a heavy, oversized muzzle.
It was equipped with multiple barrels.
ÒI wonder if the people of this time have ever seen a plasma rifle?Ó
Vlad asked.
ÒNo. Of course not,Ó Esmelda said, turning the gun in her hands. Vlad
looked at the wraith vampires and asked,
ÒHow is my drug working? Can you come out in the daylight?Ó The
vampires, as a group, nodded. Had they been more substantial they would
have been able to speak but wraith vampires were scared of substance. It
made them heavy, it weighed them down. Flesh and blood and bones would
have meant that they couldnÕt float in the night sky. There were more of
them tonight than the night before. Vlad smiled. They had found a time
machine; his machine! Even though he had left Ohio and come to Arizona
they were able to find him there, for the homing device heÕd built into the
machine attempted to land where he was, assuming it was going in that
direction.
Heading into the future, his repaired machine had been unable to
locate him, since he was in the past, digging his wife out an Ohio
graveyard. So instead it homed in on Faith. VladÕs old landlord, assuming
he was the one who stole his machine, had probably landed near Faith and
perhaps even met her. Vlad saw a glow in the distance. He stiffened.
Esmelda, holding his hand, felt his grip increase in hers and turned toward
him.
ÒHave you air fairies crashed my machine?Ó Vlad said. He glared at
the wraith vampires. His eyes turned red with emotion. The sound of his
voice, angry now, made the wraith vampires flinch, all as a group, like
fish startled by an ocean predator. They nodded ÔnoÕ.
         ÒWhatÕs wrong?Ó Esmelda asked Vlad.
ÒSomethingÕs burning up there,Ó Vlad said. He pointed further down
the winding dirt road. Half-obscured by the trees, there was an orange-
yellow radiance. Esmelda listened; her ears were better attuned to the
night than VladÕs, for she was a century older than he was. She heard
talking.
ÒItÕs fucking humans,Ó Esmelda said. Vlad shook his head.
ÒWhat else could it be in this time?Ó he said. Nothing was dead
here, or almost nothing. If it was dead it was just a dead human, safe in
its grave. The few vampires of this time were so sparse in number that
Vlad hadnÕt met any yet. Everything in 2001 was alive, Òwith pleasure,Ó
Vlad muttered, thinking of a cigarette ad heÕd seen earlier in the day.
Disgustingly alive, like living in some McDonalds that stretched all the
way around the world.
         ÒIÕm hungry,Ó Esmelda said.
ÒIt shouldnÕt be any problem. Might even be fun,Ó Vlad said. He
noticed that the wraith vampires, aware now of the presence of food,
were flitting cautiously toward it, their shadowlike forms stretching
forward in clusters along the road. But the fire would scare them, of
course. TheyÕd hold back and let Vlad and Esmelda have first bite.
