                                           Bone Gods
                                      by Will Dockery

   After housesitting for the man
   the man with beads,
he's an artist and a man
his mind is on Canada and St. Augustine.
This is not any kind of new thing
   this blue thing
the bone god that we respect,
   and heed the call of.
   I'm a poet and a man
I answer to the mystery muses.
In our patch of underbrush one Wednesday
   of springtime splendor.
There sat old Jim Wager up from Florida
the Modern Merlin, a travelling musician,
an out of work carny, waiting with two Colt 45s.
He showed us the ash trick.
   She's a poet and a woman,
she will rip you to shreds
for suggesting otherwise on certain days.
Is it in the moon, is it in the blood,
   some Cherokee rite of passage?
There were seeds in her hair
in the crappy cold grey dawn,
   it was clammy cold but
   somehow also like a movie.
   She's a sore winner.
She's a folk singer for a chosen few.
   Tesseract right on outta here
singing the song of the magi.
